**7.1** One should not use (for the laying of the fire-altar) a broken brick, a brick which is cleft, a blackened brick (due to over or under heating), a damaged brick and a brick with scratching marks. In the layer where a brick full of natural holes (*svayamātṛṇṇā*) is used it is not to be covered (by a brick).
