In Baudhāyana's selection of units of 12 *aṅgulas* (= 1 *pada*) and 34 *tilas* (= 1 *aṅgula*) Thibaut found justification for the choice of the arbitrary relation 17² = 2.12² (approx.) leading to the origin of the formula of √2, as given in the text.
