The whole discourse assumed new dimension with the introduction of the concept of *ābhāsa* in it. It was Udbhaṭa, a predecessor of Ānandavardhana and Bhaṭṭanāyaka, who used the term for the first time. If there is impropriety in the very idea of *rasa* and *bhāva*, they become *rasābhāsa* and *bhāvābhāsa*. *Ābhāsa* is a technical term in Śaivism. The term *ābhāsa* as used in by Karṇapūra in the *vṛtti* of *Alaṁkārakastubha* also reminds of its philosophical connotation.
