⁴ There is a controversy about his date of birth. His family as well as in the tradition of Brahmo Samaj have been holding 1772 as the year of Rammohun’s birth. Ramesh Chandra Majumdar (1972/2009: 17) has made a detailed analysis of the whole problem and concludes by saying that “based on the reasonable assessment of all the evidences, available to me, the date of Rammohun’s birth is 1774 and not 1772”.
