In 1867 Max Müller had published an advertisement in *The Pundit* of Banaras inviting subscriptions to his edition of *Ṛgveda* with an explanation of the whole scheme of translation. The advertisement drew sharp reactions from traditional scholars. Responses from several *paṇḍits*, including the rejoinder by Pt. Shiv Prasad in Sanskrit were subsequently published in *The Pundit*.⁴⁷
