The Vaiśeṣika cosmology was based on speculative physics. It stands in opposition to Vedānta and it was firmly refuted by Bādarāyaṇa in his *Brahmasūtra*. It enumerated six basic categories and a theory of causation without any place for a creator. The Vedāntin naturally viewed it as a challenge to spirituality. Bādarāyaṇa therefore attacked the very fundamental theory of atomistic cosmology postulated under the Vaiśeṣika philosophy. Vaiśeṣika was equally a challenge for the Sāṁkhya.
