Raja Rammohun Roy produced before Lord William Bentinck the relevant portions from the text of *Manusmṛti* describing the conduct of a widow when he was campaigning for the eradication of the practice of *satī*.⁴⁷ Swami Vivekananda and Lala Lajpat Rai also referred to these authors of Dharmaśāstras, to substantiate of their views on the rights of women.⁴⁸
