The first fruit of these studies was a book on animal medicine, more specifically, on the treatment of elephants: a translation of the Mātaṅgalilā of Nīlakaṇṭha and of excerpts from the Hastyāyurveda; an introduction and commentary were added.² This is not the place to review in detail the results of Zimmer’s interpretation. But it is of interest to note certain parallels between Hindu animal medicine and human medicine, and to emphasize some of the findings concerning medicine in general which Zimmer formulated here, yet failed to integrate into the Noguchi lectures.
