Its text consists of a series of medical and pharmacological monographs (kalpa) and treatises (tantra). In type they are closely akin to parallel chapters in Caraka’s encyclopedia. There are monographs on the pharmaceutic value of various drug-stuffs, such as Chebulic Myrobalan (harītaki), bitumen (śilājatu); prescriptions (yoga) of pepper (pippali) for the relief of morbid secretion of urine (pramehapraśamana); of Bombax Malabarica (picchā-vasti) used as an enema; prescriptions for tonics, aphrodisiacs and so forth.
