The compilatory character of Caraka’s encyclopedia is evident. It consists of an enormous mass of chapters (“lessons”), which overlap in content, thus bearing witness to the fact that its classic rendering grew out of a vast amount of floating tradition, consisting of monographs, single prescriptions and specialized treatises, transmitted separately and in groups.
