These irrational elements form part of the doctor's equipment, side by side with the proper use of occlusive dressings, leeches, and clyster-pipes. They represent the psychic approach of archaic psycho-somatic medicine, and are considered the indispensable subsidiary expedients of every-day routine; just as in modern times persuasion, hypnotism, and psychoanalysis are resorted to in an attempt to appease demons in the form of complexes and obsessions. There are many other expedients as well, which produce an irrational suggestive effect.
