Western anatomy progressed by borrowing from astronomy the lenses which had revolutionized Renaissance cosmology. Now, the instruments of macrocosmic research were used in the investigation of the microcosm. Thus, in 1641, Malpighi discovered the capillaries and demonstrated the vascular structure of the lungs. Lacking all the resources of modern optics, devoid of the inspiring example set by the methods of modern physics, Hindu anatomy was bound to remain steeped in abstract speculation, as far as the interior of the body and the organs that carry on the life process were concerned.
