—there is under-extension, because resemblance is conveyed there more than once [anekadā]. And it cannot be said: "A serial simile is merely a combination of many similes, not a single one, and in each one of them the definition does indeed exist." If that were so, it would be the same [to claim] that reciprocal comparison too is just a combination of a simile and a *pratīpa*. Likewise, there is under-extension in reciprocal comparison such as "by the dust raised by chariots," which will be cited in the section on reciprocal comparison.
To state "expressed" in order to exclude suggested simile is also improper.
For in *tattvākhyānopamā* [simile expressing true nature], which has the form stated as:
"'This is not a lotus, but her face; these are not two bees, but her eyes'— / because the similarity is clear, that is just *tattvākhyānopamā*,"
since the resemblance is unexpressed, there would result under-extension.
And in [verses] such as:
"Your face with restless eyes, wherein the radiance of the teeth appears, / shines like a lotus with wandering bees whose filaments are barely visible,"
there would also result under-extension in the simile of the modifiers implied by the complex simile, etc. And there would also result under-extension in an elliptical simile lacking an expressive particle [vācakaluptopamā], such as "sword-dark" [śastrīśyāmā], and in a simile having a word that indicates resemblance through secondary signification, such as "a moon-friend face" [candrasuhṛnmukham].
