2.14 A syntactic role, just like an emotion, is also internal and external. Among these, that which is expressed by a finite verb is internal; that which is not expressed by a finite verb is external. The agent, the causative agent, the object, the instrument, the recipient, the point of departure, and the locus. Among the subdivisions of the internal, the agent is pure, mixed, and composite. Among these, that which is uncombined with another action or syntactic role is pure; as in: "one who has sacrificed: iṣṭī, yajñī"; "one by whom a mat has been made before: kṛtapūrvī kaṭam." That which is combined with another action is mixed; as in: "one who knows or studies grammar: vaiyākaraṇaḥ"; "that which exists perpetually: śāśvatikaḥ." That which is combined with another action and syntactic role is composite; as in: "deserves entry into the hall: śālīnaḥ ('bashful'), adhṛṣyaḥ ('unapproachable')." Among these, that whose action resides in oneself is as in: "he completes a recitative study: pārāyaṇikaḥ"; "he performs a cāndrāyaṇa penance: cāndrāyaṇikaḥ." That whose action resides in another is as in: "oil that pacifies wind: vātikaṃ tailam"; "that which pacifies bile: paittikam." That whose action resides in both another and oneself is as in: "wealth produced by gambling with dice: ākṣadyūtikaṃ dhanam"; "produced by cooking: pākimaḥ." That wherein the object share is prominent is as in: "jasmine vines that ripen in spring: vāsantyaḥ"; "rice grains that mature in sixty nights: ṣāṣṭikāḥ śālayaḥ." That wherein the object share is non-prominent and prominent is as in: "one who has come under control: vaśyaḥ"; "deserving decapitation: śīrṣacchedyaḥ." The object is of two kinds: that which is to be produced and that which is to be reached. Among these, that which is produced when nonexistent, or manifested when existent, is that which is to be produced; as in: "a son produced from one's own chest: aurasaḥ putraḥ"; "the grammar proclaimed by Pāṇini: pāṇinīyaṃ vyākaraṇam." That whose original nature is destroyed or to which another quality is imparted is that which is to be transformed; as in: "an enemy to be slain with poison: viṣyaḥ śatruḥ"; "a cloth dyed with safflower: kausumbhaṃ vastram." That which is sought to be reached by action, whether stationary or unstationary, is that which is to be reached; as in: "a lake to be crossed by a boat: nāvyo hradaḥ"; "a gaming piece to be moved across the board: ayānayīnaḥ śāraḥ."
