layāntaraprayogeṇa rāgaiś cāpi vivecitam | nānārasaṃ sunirvāhyakathaṃ kāvyam iti smṛtam ||

Distinguished by the use of different tempos and by rāgas, with various rasas and a story well carried through: that is called kāvya [a sung poem].
