arthaprakṛtayaḥ pañca pañcāvasthāsamanvitāḥ /
yathāsaṅkhyena jāyante mukhādyāḥ pañca sandhayaḥ //
‘There are five Elements of the plot (arthaprakṛti), parallel with the five Stages (avasthā) [of the action]; [from these] respectively arise the five Junctures (saṃdhi), beginning with the Opening (mukha).’
