ceṣṭayā, yathā-
prahlāda-vatsala vayaṃ bibhimo vihārād
asmād iti dhvanita-narmasu gopikāsu | līlā-mṛdu stana-taṭeṣu nakhāṅkurāṇi
vyāpārayann avatu vaḥ śikhi-piccha-mauliḥ ||

By action, as:
'"O You who love Prahlāda, we are terrified of this sport!"—
when the cowherdesses uttered these whispered witticisms,
moving sprouting fingernails play-gently upon their sloping breasts,
may the One crowned with peacock plumes protect you!'

1.498.p1

atra nakhāṅkura-vyāpāreṇa janitasya gopikā-hasitasya prahlāda-vatsaleti caturokti-rūpasya śṛṅgārāṅgatayā tad idam aṅgaṃ bhaya-hāsyajam |

Here, because the laughter of the cowherdesses produced by the movement of the sprouting fingernails—taking the form of clever speech like 'O You who love Prahlāda'—is subordinate to the erotic sentiment, this is the subordinate [variety] arising from fear and laughter.
