are 327. The number of elapsed ghaṭīs of the tithi is 15 [ghaṭīs and] 50 [palas]. Its palas are [950, read corruptly as] 650. The quotient obtained by the internal rising palas is 2 elapsed sounds; the remainder is 266; in the remainder, the third sound from the letter 'a' has risen. If the inquiry was made by Devendra standing to the east, south, west, or north of the one who speaks the result of the inquiry, and if that direction is setting according to the rule declared by the Sarvatobhadra wheel, then one must predict failure of the undertaking concerning which the inquiry was made. In rash acts such as battle, there is fear; in battle, defeat; in an inquiry about health, death; and so on should be spoken. 'The odd sounds' and so on: the odd sounds are the uneven sounds, namely the first, third, and fifth—a, u, o—these three are male, masculine sounds. The even sounds are the matching sounds—i, e—these matching sounds are designated as female. At the rising of their respective sounds, that is, at the rising of the masculine sound designated as odd, men have strength. At the rising of the even sound designated as female, women, those of female kind, have strength. So far, at the rising of their respective sounds, the undertakings designated by each are accomplished. And likewise, when a male sound is operating in the infant-and-other states, a man is strong; while in conception, there is certainly the birth of a son; in a female sound, the birth of a daughter. 'Regarding pregnancy': the enquirer asks, 'Will there be a son or a daughter in this womb?' At that inquiry, if there is the rising of the letter 'a', 'u', or 'o' at that time, then it should be said that there will be a son in the womb. If at that time there is the rising of the letter 'i' or 'e', then a daughter should be declared in the womb. At the rising of a pair of sounds, namely male and female, one should predict twins. At the rising of a ruined sound, set or pierced by a malefic, destruction of the pregnancy should be declared. At a transition, when the rising of a male-female sound concludes, the death of the mother should be declared. 'The day and the nāḍī': 'day' is the tithi sound; 'nāḍī' is the ghaṭī sound, the internal rising sounds of five ghaṭīs at that time; and if both are odd and named as male, then one should predict two sons. Similarly, if both the day sound and ghaṭī sound are female-named, then one should predict two daughters. If they are male and female—of the two, the letter 'a' is male and the letter 'e' is female—then one should say that there will be a boy and a girl. If one of these two is ruined, set, or through planetary piercing, then its destruction should be declared.
