2. Skt. kāmāloka/kāmadhātu, rūpaloka/rūpadhātu, and arūpaloka/arūpadhātu/ārūpyadhātu. We have adopted Gethin’s English translations of these terms (Gethin 1998, ch. 5, especially pp. 116–17). This summary of the Buddhist understanding of the cosmos according to the Abhidharma follows Gethin 1998 and The Sūtra on the Limits of Life itself. Gethin’s account follows mainly the Abhidharma tradition of the Theravādins. The accounts of other early Buddhist schools are largely in agreement and deviate only in certain details.
