The Long Āgama Sūtra 16.21

16.21

「畏伏而強親，美言親亦爾；
敬順虛誑親，惡友為惡親。
此親不可恃，智者當覺知；
宜速遠離之，如避于嶮道。」

“One who submits out of fear is a forced friend;
The friend who uses beautiful words is likewise.
Followers out of respect are false friends,
And bad companions make bad friends.

These friends aren’t reliable;
The wise should know and recognize them.
They ought to be abandoned quickly,
Like avoiding a dangerous road.”
