(19) The Great Assembly Sūtra, the Fifteenth, in the Second Section of the Dīrghāgama Spoken by the Buddha
Thus I have heard: One time, the Buddha was staying at Kapilavastu in the country of the Śākyans. He was accompanied by a large assembly of five hundred monks, all of whom were arhats. Marvelous gods had also gathered from the ten directions to honor the Tathāgata and the saṅgha of monks.
19.2
Thus have I heard:
19.3
At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Shakya country, in the Kapilavastu grove, together with a great assembly of five hundred bhikṣus, all of whom were arhats. Furthermore, the wonderful devas of the ten directions all assembled there to pay homage and reverence to the Tathāgata and the saṅgha of bhikṣus.
19.4
At that time, the devas of the four Śuddhāvāsa heavens thought to themselves while up in heaven: “The Bhagavat is now dwelling in the Shakya country, in the Kapilavastu grove, together with a great assembly of five hundred bhikṣus, all of whom have attained arhatship. Furthermore, the wonderful devas of the ten directions have all assembled to pay homage and reverence to the Tathāgata and the saṅgha of bhikṣus. We too should go together to the Bhagavat’s dwelling, each praising the Tathāgata with a verse.”
It was then that four Śuddhâvāsa gods up in heaven each thought to themselves, “Today, the Bhagavān is staying at Kapilavastu in the country of the Śākyans. He’s accompanied by a large assembly of five hundred monks, all of whom are arhats. Marvelous gods have also gathered from the ten directions to honor the Tathāgata and the saṅgha of monks. Now, let’s go visit the Bhagavān as well. We’ll each praise the Tathāgata with a verse.”
19.5
Then, as quickly as a strong man flexing and extending his arm, the devas of the four Śuddhāvāsa heavens vanished from that heaven and arrived in the Kapilavastu grove in the Shakya country. Upon their arrival, the devas of the four Śuddhāvāsa heavens touched their heads and faces to his feet in homage, and stood to one side. Then one Śuddhāvāsa deva praised him before the Buddha with a verse, saying:
Those four Śuddhâvāsa gods then disappeared from their heaven and arrived at Kapilavastu of the Śākyans in the time it takes a strong man to flex his arm. Once they had arrived, those four Śuddhâvāsa gods bowed their heads at the Buddha’s feet and stood to one side.
The first Śuddhâvāsa god went before the Buddha and praised him with this verse:
19.6
「今日大眾會,諸天神普集;
“Today there is a great gathering of the assembly, / With all the devas and spirits gathered together; / All have come for the sake of the Dharma, / Wishing to pay homage to the unsurpassed assembly.”
“Today, a great congregation
Of gods and spirits has gathered.
They’ve come for the Dharma
And to bow to the supreme assembly.”
19.7
Having spoken this verse, he withdrew and stood to one side. Then another Śuddhāvāsa deva spoke a verse, saying:
After speaking this verse, that god withdrew and stood to one side. Another Śuddhâvāsa god then composed a verse:
19.8
「比丘見眾穢,端心自防護;
“The bhikṣu perceives all impurities, / And protects himself with an upright mind; / Desires are like an ocean swallowing streams, / The wise one guards the sense faculties.”
“Monks see the many defilements;
Their upright minds guard against them.
Desire is like the sea swallowing rivers;
The wise guard their faculties against it.”
19.9
Having spoken this verse, he withdrew and stood to one side. Then another Śuddhāvāsa deva spoke a verse, saying:
Having spoken this verse, that god withdrew and stood to one side. Another Śuddhâvāsa god then composed a verse:
19.10
「斷刺平愛坑,及填無明壍;
“Severing thorns, leveling the pit of longing, / And filling the moat of ignorance; / He roams alone in the field of purity, / Like a well-tamed, noble elephant.”
“Remove thorns, level craving’s chasm,
And fill the trench of ignorance.
Trek alone to the site of purity
Like excellent, well-trained elephants.”
19.11
Having spoken this verse, he withdrew and stood to one side. Then another Śuddhāvāsa deva spoke a verse, saying:
Having spoken this verse, that god withdrew and stood to one side. Another Śuddhâvāsa god composed a verse:
19.12
「諸歸依佛者,終不墮惡趣;
“All who take refuge in the Buddha / Will never fall into the evil destinies; / Casting off this human form, / They will receive a pure celestial body.”
“Taking refuge in the Buddha,
One never falls to a bad destiny.
They abandon their human forms
And receive the pure bodies of gods.”
19.13
At that time, when the devas of the four Śuddhāvāsa heavens had spoken these verses, the Bhagavat gave his approval. They immediately paid homage to the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated the Buddha three times, and suddenly disappeared. Not long after their departure, the Buddha told the bhikṣus: “Today there is a great gathering of devas! Today there is a great gathering of devas! None among the wonderful devas of the ten directions has failed to come here to pay homage to the Tathāgata and the saṅgha of bhikṣus. Bhikṣus! For the past Tathāgatas, arhats, samyaksaṃbuddhas, there were also great gatherings of devas, just as for me today. For the future Tathāgatas, arhats, samyaksaṃbuddhas, there will also be great gatherings of devas, just as for me today. Bhikṣus! Today there is a great gathering of devas; none among the wonderful devas of the ten directions has failed to come here to pay homage to the Tathāgata and the saṅgha of bhikṣus. I shall also proclaim their names and speak verses for them. Bhikṣus, you should know:
After those four Śuddhâvāsa gods had presented these verses, the Bhagavān approved of them. They bowed at the Buddha’s feet, circled him three times, and suddenly disappeared.
Not long after they left, the Buddha told the monks, “There’s a great congregation of gods today! There’s a great gathering of gods today! Marvelous gods from the ten directions have come to honor and look upon the Tathāgata and saṅgha of monks. Monks, the Tathāgatas, Arhats, and Completely Awakened Ones of the past also had great congregations of gods, just as I do today. The Tathāgatas, Arhats, and Completely Awakened Ones in the future will have great congregations of gods, just as I do today.
“Monks, this great congregation of gods today consists of spirits and sublime gods from the ten directions who’ve come to honor and look upon the Tathāgata and saṅgha of monks. They also praise their names in verses that they speak for you.
“Monks, you should know:
19.14
「諸依地山谷,隱藏見可畏;
天人聞此已,皆歸於梵天;
諸天眾今來,比丘汝當知;
若見十萬鬼,猶不見一邊;
“Those dwelling in the earth, mountains, and valleys, / Concealed and fearsome to behold, / Are dressed in pure white robes, / Spotless and free of defilement. / Devas and humans, having heard this, / All take refuge in Brahmā; / Now I proclaim their names, / In sequence without error. / The hosts of devas have now arrived; / Bhikṣus, you should know: / The intellect of ordinary mortals in the world / Cannot see even one in a hundred. / How could they ever be able to see / The seventy-thousand-strong host of spirits? / Even if one saw a hundred thousand spirits, / One would still not see a fraction of them, / How much less all the spirits / Pervading the entire world!”
“Living in the Earth’s mountains and valleys,
They hide when they see terrible things.
Those wearing all white clothes
Are pure and immaculate.
When the gods and people hear this,
They take refuge in the god Brahmā.
“Now, I will praise their names
In order, without any missing.
This assembly of gods has come today;
You monks should know them.
“All the worldly people’s knowledge
Doesn’t see a hundredth of them.
How then could they see
The assembly of 70,000 demon spirits?
If they saw 100,000 demons,
They haven’t seen all of them on one side.
How could they see the demon spirits
That are everywhere under heaven?
19.15

19.17
At that time, the Bhagavat, wishing to subdue their deceitful and false minds, uttered an incantation, saying:
The Bhagavān then wanted to vanquish their illusory and deluded thoughts, so he composed this incantation: “Deceptive (māyā) is [Kiṭi]; deceptive is [Kiṭi]! [So is Vikiṭi; so is Vikiṭi]! Candana, Kāmaśreṣtha, Kunikaṇṭha, Nikaṇṭha, Praṇāda, Upapañcaka, the charioteer of gods Mātali, the gandharva Citrasena, Nara, Janavṛṣabha, Sīva, Mucalinda, Viśvamitra, Yugandhara, [Pañcaśikha], Tumburu, and Sūryavarcasā.
19.18
In this way, the kings, gandharvas, and rākṣasas all possessed supernormal powers, bodily forms, and appearances, and came with joyful minds to the grove of the bhikṣu assembly. At that time, the Bhagavat again uttered an incantation, saying:
“God kings, gandharvas, and rākṣasas such as these all possess miraculous abilities, appearances, and forms. With delighted thoughts, they have come to visit the assembly of monks in this grove.”
The Bhagavān then created another incantation:
19.20
“Then, the nāga Nāgasā came from Vaiśāla with Takṣaka.
The Yamunā dhṛtarāṣṭras came, as did [Tiva] with their kin.
Kambalas, aśvataras, and nāgas of great miraculous ability have come.
The great nāga Airāvaṇa and the nāga [Vima] have come.
“Of the clear-eyed heavenly birds that hunt the nāga kings,
The colorful Suparṇa came to the grove from the sky.
The nāga kings are unafraid, for the Buddha [makes them safe from Suparṇa].
Greeting them with gentle words, Suparṇa took refuge in the Buddha.”
19.21
At that time, the Bhagavat uttered an incantation for the asuras, saying:
The Bhagavān then created an incantation for the asuras:
19.22
“Defeated by Vajrahastena, the asuras fled to the ocean;
Vāsavassi frightened them with his great miraculous power.
The asuras were Kālakañja, Mahābhīmṣa, [Dānaveghasā],
Vemacitra, Sucitra, Prahlāda, Mucilinda, and [Nava].
A hundred of [Asi-?] Bali’s children, all named Vairocana,
[prepared Bali’s army and approached] the fortunate Rāhu:
‘Now is the time, sir. The monks have gathered in a grove.’”
19.23
At that time, the Bhagavat again uttered an incantation for the devas, saying:
The Bhagavān again created an incantation for the gods:
19.24

19.25

At that time, there were also one thousand brāhmaṇas with the five supernormal knowledges, for whom the Tathāgata likewise uttered an incantation. At that time, the foremost Brahmā king of this world and the various Brahmā devas all possessed supernormal powers; there was a Brahmā youth named Tisya who possessed great supernormal powers. Furthermore, there were the other Brahmā kings of the ten directions, each arriving surrounded by his retinue. Furthermore, crossing a thousand worlds, there was a Great Brahmā King who saw the great assembly around the Bhagavat and immediately came, surrounded by his retinue.
There was then another 1,000 five-powered priests for whom the Tathāgata also compiled an incantation.
The first Brahma king of this world and the gods of the Brahma heavens possessed miraculous abilities. There was a Brahma prince named Tiṣya who possessed great miraculous power.
There was also the other Brahma kings of the ten directions, each of whom was surrounded by their followers as they came. There was a great Brahma king from beyond 1,000 worlds who saw the great congregations of the Bhagavān. He came quickly with his followers surrounding him.

At that time, the demon king Māra saw the great assembly around the Bhagavat, and harbouring a malicious mind, thought to himself: “I shall lead my demonic army to destroy that assembly, surrounding and capturing them completely without leaving anyone behind.” Immediately, he summoned the four divisions of his army and slapped his chariot with his hands, making a sound like a thunderclap, such that none who saw or heard it failed to be terrified. Unleashing great wind and rain, thunder, lightning, and thunderbolts, he advanced toward the Kapilavastu grove to surround the great assembly.
King Māra saw the great congregation around the Bhagavān and had a cruel thought. He thought to himself, “I’ll lead an army of demons to go and destroy that entire congregation. I won’t let any of them escape!”
He then commanded his fourfold army to beat their chariots with their hands, which sounded like crashing thunder. None who saw them weren’t frightened by it. He sent a great storm of wind, rain, lightning, and thunder at that great congregation that surrounded Kapila Grove.

The Buddha told the bhikṣus who took joy in this assembly: “You should know that today the host of Māra has come harbouring evil.” Thereupon he spoke a verse, saying:
The Buddha addressed the monks who were delighted with this assembly: “You should know that today Māra’s host is coming with evil intent!”
He then said in verse:
19.30
「汝今當敬順,建立於佛法;
專念無放逸,具足於淨戒;
若於正法中,能不放逸者;
諸弟子聞已,當勤加精進;
此眾為最勝,有大智名聞;
“You should now revere, follow, / And establish yourselves in the Buddha’s Dharma; / You shall destroy this host of Māra, / As an elephant crushes a cluster of blossoms. / Mindful, free from heedlessness, / Fully endowed with pure morality; / With concentrated mind and personal reflection, / Guarding your intentions well. / If within the True Dharma / One is capable of being heedless no more, / One will cross over the realm of aging and death, / And bring a permanent end to the root of all suffering. / The disciples, having heard this, / Should strive diligently with vigour; / Transcending all desires, / Not a single hair is shaken. / This assembly is the most supreme, / Possessing great wisdom and renown; / The disciples are all courageous, / Revered by the assembly.”
“Now, you should be respectful
And establish the Buddha’s Dharma.
You must destroy this host of Māra
Like elephants trampling flowers and grass.
Focus your attention without carelessness
And perfect the pure precepts.
Still your minds, think naturally,
And guard your intentions well.
If in the correct teaching
You can not be careless,
You’ll be freed from old age and death
And forever end the source of suffering.
After disciples hear this,
They diligently make effort.
Transcending the myriad desires,
Not a single hair of theirs is disturbed.
This assembly is the greatest;
It possesses great knowledge and renown.
It’s disciples are courageous
And respected by the community.”
19.31
At that time, all the devas, spirits, ghosts, and ṛṣis endowed with the five supernormal knowledges gathered in the Kapilavastu park. Seeing what Māra had done, they considered it unprecedented. When the Buddha spoke this Dharma, eighty-four thousand devas separated from dust and removed defilement, attaining the purity of the Dharma eye. The devas, nāgas, ghosts, spirits, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, having heard what the Buddha spoke, rejoiced and undertook to practice it.
The gods, spirits, yakṣas, and sages of five powers who surrounded the Buddha saw what Māra was doing and were shocked like never before. When the Buddha taught this Dharma, 84,000 gods became removed from dust and free of defilement, and their vision of the Dharma was purified.
The gods, nāgas, yakṣas, spirits, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnara, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans who heard what the Buddha taught rejoiced and approved.
