684.4

At that time, the Bhagavat addressed the bhikṣus: "If a bhikṣu develops nirvid, virāga, nirodha, non-arising, and vimukti regarding rūpa, he is called a Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha. The same is said for vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna. If, furthermore, a bhikṣu develops nirvid, virāga, non-arising, and vimukti regarding rūpa, he is called an Arhat liberated through wisdom (prajñāvimukta). The same is said for vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna. Bhikṣus, what distinction and difference is there between a Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha and an Arhat prajñāvimukta?"

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks, “Suppose a monk grows tired of form and parts with desire for it. It ceases completely, doesn’t arise, and he’s liberated from it. This is called the unsurpassed, correct, and complete awakening. Feeling, conception, volition, and consciousness are likewise. Suppose, again, a monk grows tired of form and parts with desire for it. It doesn’t arise, and he’s liberated from it. This is called an arhat liberated by wisdom. Feeling, conception, volition, and consciousness are likewise. Monks, what are the various differences between the Tathāgata, Arhat, and Completely Awakened One and an arhat who’s liberated by wisdom?”

Charles Patton, The Connected Discourses (selected sūtras)

684.5

諸比丘白佛:「世尊是法根、法眼、法依,唯願為說,諸比丘聞已,當受奉行。」

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "The Bhagavat is the root of the Dharma, the eye of the Dharma, the refuge of the Dharma. We only pray that you will explain it; having heard it, the bhikṣus will uphold and practice it."

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

The monks said to the Buddha, “The Bhagavān is the Dharma root, the Dharma eye, and the Dharma support! Please let him explain it. Once they hear it, the monks will accept and approve of it.”

Charles Patton, The Connected Discourses (selected sūtras)

684.6

The Buddha addressed the bhikṣus: "Listen attentively and consider it well; I will explain it to you. A Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, regarding dharmas previously unheard, is able to awaken by himself, knows them directly in the present life, attains sambodhi, and in future ages can teach the true Dharma to awaken the śrāvakas—namely, the smṛtyupasthānas, the samyakprahāṇas, the ṛddhipādas, the pañcendriyas, the pañcabalas, the bodhyaṅgas, and the āryāṣṭāṅgamārga. This is called a Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha. He is able to attain dharmas not yet attained, able to formulate the brahmacarya not yet formulated, knows the path well and teaches the path well, being a guide for the assembly. Thereafter, the śrāvakas accomplish following the Dharma and following the path, taking joy in upholding the Teacher's admonitions and instructions, and are proficient in the true Dharma. This is called the various distinctions between a Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha and an Arhat prajñāvimukta.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

The Buddha told the monks, “Listen closely, and consider it well. I’ll explain this for you. Before the teaching had yet to be heard, the Tathāgata, Arhat, and Completely Awakened One realized and knew it himself. Knowing it himself in the present life, he attained complete awakening. He was able at a future time to explain the correct teaching that awakened his disciples, namely the four abodes of mindfulness, four right efforts, four mental abilities, five faculties, five powers, seven factors of awakening, and the eightfold path. This is called the Tathāgata, Arhat, and Completely Awakened One.

Charles Patton, The Connected Discourses (selected sūtras)

“He attained the teaching that had yet to be attained, managed the religious practice that had yet to be managed, and well knew the path that he knows well as the leader of this assembly. Afterward, his disciples succeeded in following the teaching and the path. They are delighted and appreciate the great teacher’s instruction, teaching, and skill in the correct Dharma. These are called the various differences between the Tathāgata, Arhat, and Completely Awakened One and the arhat who’s liberated by wisdom.

At that time, born there, I had such a family, such a clan, such a name, such food, such experiences of pleasure and pain, such a long life, such duration, such a life span. "Furthermore, the Tathāgata, with the purified divine eye surpassing that of humans, sees sentient beings dying and being reborn—handsome, ugly, inferior, superior, heading to bad destinies, heading to good destinies—and has yathābhūtaprajñāna of their receiving according to the law of karma: 'These beings accomplished bodily bad karma, accomplished verbal and mental bad karma, slandered noble ones, and engaged in actions based on wrong view; due to these causes and conditions, with the breakup of the body after death, they fall into bad destinies and are born in hell. These beings accomplished good bodily conduct, good verbal and mental conduct, did not slander noble ones, and acted in accordance with right view; due to those causes and conditions, with the breakup of the body after death, they are born in good destinies, in the heavens.' When they are born, they have wonderful forms, ugly forms, lower forms, and higher forms. They head for bad destinations and head for good destinations, and they experience them according to their deeds. He truly knows: ‘This sentient being has committed bad physical deeds and committed bad verbal and mental deeds that are criticized by the noble ones. That sentient being accepts the deeds of wrong view. Because of these causes and conditions, it’ll fall to the bad destination of being born in hell when its life ends and its body breaks up.’ ‘This sentient being’s good physical deeds and good verbal and mental deeds aren’t criticized by the noble ones. That sentient being accepts the deeds of right view. Because of these causes and conditions, they’ll be born in a good destination up in heaven when their life ends and their body breaks up.’ He truly knows all of this. "Furthermore, the Tathāgata's āsravas are already exhausted (kṣīṇāsrava); through the taintless cittavimukti and prajñāvimukti, he knows directly for himself and realizes in his own body in this very life: 'My births are exhausted, the brahmacarya is established, what was to be done has been done, and I know for myself that there will be no further becoming (nāparaṃ bhavam).' This is called the tenth power of the Tathāgata. If this power is accomplished, the Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha attains the knowledge of the most supreme place of previous Buddhas, is able to turn the brahmacakra, and roars the siṃhanāda in the great assembly.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

“Furthermore, the Tathāgata has ended the contaminants. Without contaminants, his mind is liberated, and his wisdom is liberated. In the present life, he knows and has personally realized, ‘My births have been ended, the religious practice has been established, and the task has been accomplished. I myself know I won’t be subject to a later existence.’ This is called the Tathāgata’s tenth power. If someone accomplished this power, it would be the Tathāgata, Arhat, and Completely Awakened One. Before becoming a buddha, he attained the highest abode of knowledge. He turned the Brahma wheel and roared the lion’s roar amid his great assembly.
