The Karmaśataka, [Fascicle 3]. Concerning the [story] called 'Kṣemā': the nidāna is set in Śrāvastī. At that time, King Prasenajit was ruling in Śrāvastī, and in Vārāṇasī a king named Brahmadatta was ruling. Those two were hostile toward each other, and from time to time they put many people to death. Then, sometime later, King Brahmadatta equipped his fourfold army, went to the land of Kośala, and having pitched camp on the bank of the river Khāndin, stayed there. King Prasenajit heard: 'King Brahmadatta has equipped his fourfold army and come to do battle with me.' Having heard this, he too equipped his fourfold army and went out to do battle with the king of Kāśi, and having pitched camp on the bank of the river Khāndin, he stayed there. Then, sometime later, while remaining in that very state, King Prasenajit
