/ When asleep or awake, / whatever cognition has a clear appearance, / that is non-conceptual in both cases; / otherwise, it is conceptual. / Therefore, even if it is non-conceptual, / its status as pramāṇa is rejected / because it is deceptive; for that purpose too, / pseudo-direct perception was explained as twofold. / It is said that [an instrument] establishes an action; / not all factors establishing all actions / [are instruments], but that from which an effect arises / is the establisher of that [action]. / In that regard, a cognition having a nature / that is similar merely as an experience— / what is that nature which differentiates / its distinct action? / Even if there is difference in causes that do not alter the intrinsic nature, / this lack of difference in different actions / does not determine difference. / Therefore, that from whose difference in nature / there is determination of the action of the agent / in terms of 'this is the comprehension of this' / is established as possessing the instrument of that. / Even though by some aspect the nature of cognition / causes difference, / that which relates it to the object / is not other than the intrinsic nature of the object. / Therefore, the instrument for comprehending the object of knowledge / is the very nature of the object of knowledge; / if the instrument were something other, / its relation to that action would not be established. / That also is its nature; / therefore the result is not an external object. / That apprehension of its nature, / through the operation whose nature is the comprehension of the object, / appears as if endowed with an instrument / with respect to its own action. / Although itself not an agent, / because it is posited as such by the power of that— / for example, because the effect arises / resembling the nature of the causes, / even though it is not the nature of an action, / the world says that it takes the form of the cause. / Therefore, seeing, sensory contact, / and those distinct cognitions, / because they are intervened with respect to the action, / are not accepted as pramāṇa. / Even though all instruments / are applied to an action, / that which is the final differentiator / is accepted as its supreme instrument.
