When other factors that serve as causes for the apprehension of such an entity manifest to the cognizer are present, not being apprehended in that way is the domain of the conventional expression 'non-existent'. A mark whose appearance is other than that is doubt; and here, all such appearances are pervaded by the fact that they are the domain of all non-existents, because with respect to admitting that something does not exist, other things have the identical characteristic. If such non-existence were not accepted, then otherwise it would have no relation: when there is such a form and the other conditions for apprehension are present, non-apprehension does not occur. Since not apprehending what is like this is non-existence, the ground for the conventional expression 'non-existent' is only that, because there is no other ground for it. If you say, 'Being devoid of all efficacy is the ground,' then indeed, that being devoid of all efficacy is known precisely in that way, for there is no other means of cognizing it. Since the conventional expression 'non-existent' occurs when that is cognized, this is stated to be its ground. If you say, 'Cognition, word, and purposive action are the conventional expression 'existent', and their opposites are the conventional expression 'non-existent',' then the conventional expression 'existent' is from the appearance of cognition as described, and its opposite domain is the conventional expression 'non-existent'. That which is not an object of direct perception can also give rise to the conventional expression 'existent' based on some mark, whereas the conventional expression 'non-existent' is inconclusive regarding its exclusion: if the direct perception or other valid cognition of the cognizer is excluded with respect to a remote object, it is doubtful. The diversity or non-diversity of all cognitions and words does not establish the existence of an entity, or the diversity or non-diversity of an entity. However it may be, with respect to non-existent things such as the past and future, and those performing diverse purposive actions or a single purposive action, although there are no entities that are diverse or single by nature, nevertheless, in order to illuminate that very thing,
