While the heedless are always dying.
Knowing this distinction,
The wise are heedful;
Greatly delighting in heedfulness,
They delight in the domain of the Noble Ones.
Constantly meditating upon this,
Ever steadfast in overcoming the other,
The steadfast touch nirvāṇa,
The unsurpassed happiness of accomplishment.
When the wise, through heedfulness,
Have vanquished heedlessness,
They ascend the palace of wisdom;
Free from sorrow, the steadfast look down
From the mountain peak upon the sorrowing,
Upon the fools on the ground below.
Through diligence, heedfulness,
Flawless restraint, and discipline,
The wise person makes an island
And turns back the great flood.
Endowed with diligence and mindful,
Pure in conduct and acting with reflection,
Restrained and living by dharma,
The renown of the heedful flourishes greatly.
Be heedful with the higher mind;
Train in the Muni’s foundations of asceticism.
Pacified, ever mindful,
The protector is free from sorrow.
Do not rely on inferior teachings;
Do not rely on heedlessness.
Have no desire for wrong views,
And do not make the world increase.
Whoever possesses the great
Right view of the worldly,
Even across a thousand lifetimes
Will not fall into the lower realms.
Those who engage in heedlessness
Are foolish people of ruined thought;
As a merchant guards his wealth,
So the wise should be heedful.
Not engaging in heedlessness,
Not accumulating delight in desires,
Constantly meditating with heedfulness,
One will attain the exhaustion of defilements.
Even if the exhaustion of defilements is not attained,
One must not be heedless at this time;
Just as a lion [kills] a doe,
The heedless will be slain.
To any heedless man who consorts with another’s wife,
These four states will occur:
He will not gain merit; he will not sleep in peace;
Third, he will be despised; and fourth, he will go to hell.
