2.63
Cut off the stream and rely on yourself; banish the mind and repel desires;
If a benevolent person does not sever desires, even a focused mind will still run wild.
Act! Act! One must strongly restrain oneself;
Leaving home yet being lax, the mind will still be stained again.
If one's practice is lax and slow, how could wearying thoughts be removed?
Without pure brahmacarya, how could one attain the great treasure?
What conduct is that of a śramaṇa? If the mind is not restrained,
At every step clinging to stickiness, merely running after thoughts.
With the kāṣāya draped over the shoulder, doing evil without lessening it,
Those who perform evil deeds will fall into bad destinies.
Untamed and hard to admonish, like a withered tree in the wind;
Since one acts for oneself, why not be vigorous?
Resting the mind does not mean shaving the head; arrogant and deceitful, without śīla,
Abandoning greed and contemplating the Way—only then does one conform to resting the mind;
Resting the mind does not mean shaving the head; indolent and without faith,
One who can extinguish all suffering is a supreme śramaṇa.
