At that time, Śāriputra knew the doubt in the minds of the four assemblies and himself did not yet understand, so he addressed the Buddha, saying: "Bhagavat! By what cause, by what condition do you earnestly praise the foremost upāya of the Buddhas, the profound, subtle, and wondrous Dharma that is difficult to understand? From the past until now, I have never heard such a teaching from the Buddha; now the four assemblies all have doubts. We pray only that the Bhagavat will expound this matter. For what reason does the Bhagavat earnestly praise the profound, subtle, and wondrous Dharma that is difficult to understand?"
