The treatise says: That this sūtra repeatedly speaks of "bhikṣus" is in order to reveal the mark of renunciation. It also shows that the Mahāyāna upāyamārga is shared with the dviyāna. Furthermore, the caturpariṣad also share the practice of renunciation. "After my extinction": these words reveal the meaning of the bequeathed teaching, and that the Dharma is not entirely extinguished; for by means of the inexhaustible pure dharmakāya, it constantly effects ultimate deliverance for the world. As the sūtra says, "you must respect, value, and honor the prātimokṣa." Because this mokṣa is also a dharma that accords with the vinaya, and furthermore has the meaning of vinaya over all conditioned actions, it is taught as the prātimokṣa of the Tathāgata's unextinguished dharmakāya, whose nature is mokṣa. Relying on this dharmakāya, one can overcome two kinds of obstacles: first, the obstacle of the darkness of kleśa; second, the obstacle of being empty of kuśalamūla. Overcoming the obstacle of the darkness of kleśa is analogous to a blind person obtaining eyes; as the sūtra says, "as if coming upon light in darkness." Overcoming the obstacle of being empty of kuśalamūla is analogous to becoming fully endowed with wealth and treasure; as the sūtra says, "as a poor person obtaining treasure." The remainder reveals that the prātimokṣa is the great śāstṛ of practice; as the sūtra says, "You should know that this is your great śāstṛ." It also shows that upholding it and benefiting people are similar to the Dharma; as the sūtra says, "if I were to abide in the world, it would be no different from this." Having explained reliance on the fundamental pure precepts, next I shall explain the skillful renunciation of pure precepts.
