The Treatise says: How does one encourage the benefit of cultivating the precepts? Within this there are five kinds of exhortation: First, exhorting not to lose their self-nature, as the sūtra says: "You should uphold the pure precepts." Second, exhorting not to abandon skillful means, as the sūtra says: "Not allow them to be violated or broken." Third, exhorting to keep far away from all faults of physical, verbal, and mental karma, and constantly accumulate merit, as the sūtra says: "If a person can uphold the pure precepts, then they can possess good dharmas." Fourth, exhorting to know that having many faults and evils in body, speech, and mind makes one unable at all times to generate merit, as the sūtra says: "If there are no pure precepts, all wholesome merits cannot arise." Fifth, showing that for the practicing bodhisattva who has such gains and losses regarding the three kinds of precepts to be cultivated, 'I shall abide in a secure place, and not abide in an insecure place,' as the sūtra says: "Therefore, you should know that precepts are the foremost dwelling place of secure merit." These words directly demonstrate the supreme meaning of encouraging the benefit of cultivation. Having explained the cultivation and accumulation of the merits of the antidotes to evil karma, next is explained the cultivation and accumulation of the merits of stopping suffering as an antidote. In this, suffering is of three kinds: first, the suffering of the heedlessness of the sense desires; second, the suffering of overeating; third, the suffering of laxity and sleep. One should know that these three kinds of suffering are counteracted by the gate of samādhi bliss. What is the antidote to the suffering of the heedlessness of the sense desires?
