How will such an endowment ever be gained again?
Just as a flash of lightning illuminates the darkness for an instant
Within the dense black clouds of the night,
Likewise, through the power of the Buddha,
A virtuous intention occasionally arises in the world for a moment.
Thus, virtue is always frail and weak,
While the power of sin is colossal and extremely terrible.
Aside from the perfect bodhicitta,
What other virtue can overcome it?
Having deeply considered it for many kalpas,
The lords of sages have seen that this alone is beneficial.
By this, immeasurable assemblies of beings
Easily attain supreme happiness.
Those who wish to overcome the hundreds of sufferings of existence,
Who wish to dispel the unhappiness of sentient beings,
And who wish to experience many hundreds of joys,
Should never abandon bodhicitta.
When bodhicitta has arisen, in that very instant,
Wretched beings bound in the prison of saṃsāra
Are spoken of as sons of the Sugatas,
And become objects of homage for gods and humans in the world.
