his endeavor accomplished, and his aspiration accomplished." Thus it is said. Furthermore, from that very text: "Since he is distinguished by the dharmakāya, he benefits sentient beings even through their seeing him. He benefits sentient beings even through their hearing and touching [him]. Śāntamati, it is like this: for example, the king of physicians Jīvaka gathered all elixirs, and out of many medicinal plants made the form of a maiden—splendid, beautiful, lovely to behold, well made, well finished, and well polished. Whether she came, went, stood, sat, or lay down, she was devoid of conceptuality and free of discursive thought. Then, whatever sick people came—venerable, venerable kings, great royal ministers, princes, merchant leaders, householders, ministers, or vassals—the king of physicians Jīvaka had them meet that medicinal maiden, and immediately upon contact, all their diseases were cleared away, and they became free of illness and without loss of well-being. Śāntamati, look at the knowledge of healing the diseases of the world belonging to the king of physicians Jīvaka, which no other physician has! Śāntamati, just so, when the bodhisattva distinguished by the dharmakāya also touches the bodies of however many sentient beings—women, men, boys, and girls—who are completely tormented by desire, anger, and delusion, immediately upon touching, all their afflictions will be dispelled. One should know that their bodies are also freed from complete torment. This is because the previous aspiration of that very bodhisattva was exceedingly pure." Thus it is said. For that purpose, the body should be purified. Furthermore: / Just as when crops are overgrown with weeds, / They are stunted by disease and do not flourish, / Just so, the shoot of a buddha, / If covered by afflictions, will not flourish; / If cleared away with the antidote, it will increase. / Such is the intended meaning. If one asks, "What is the purification of the body?": / It is the purification of sins and afflictions. / In the manner spoken by the perfect Buddha: / Without effort, one goes to the bad destinies. / In that regard, the purification of sins is taught in the Caturdharmakanirdeśasūtra: "Maitreya, if a bodhisattva mahāsattva possesses four things, he will overcome committed and accumulated sins. What are the four? They are: the practice of repudiation, the practice of the antidote, the power of turning away from faults, and the power of the support. In that regard, the practice of repudiation is having great regret for engaging in non-virtuous actions. In that regard, the practice of the antidote is being exceedingly diligent in virtuous actions even after having committed non-virtuous actions. In that regard, the power of turning away from faults is obtaining the restraint of not committing them by properly taking vows. In that regard, the power of the support is taking refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha, and not relinquishing bodhicitta; relying on that which possesses power, one cannot be overcome by sins. Maitreya, if a bodhisattva mahāsattva possesses those four things, he will overcome committed and accumulated sins." In that regard, if one asks how the practice of condemnation is to be cultivated, it is as taught in the Suvarṇaprabhāsasūtra: / The buddhas, supreme among bipeds, / Endowed with an affectionate and compassionate mind, / However many reside in the worlds of the ten directions, / Please turn your attention to me! / Whatever severely intolerable sinful deeds / I have committed previously, / Having approached before the Ten-Powered Ones, / I confess them all. / Not regarding [them] as father and mother, / Not regarding [them] as buddhas, / And not regarding [them] as virtues— / Whatever sins I have committed through these, / And arrogant with the intoxication of wealth, / Intoxicated with lineage and resources, / And puffed up with the intoxication of youth— / Whatever sins I have committed, / And not seeing the faults as objects of regard, / Actions committed as faults, / And wrongly accumulated and wrongly spoken— / Whatever sinful actions I have committed, / And proceeding with the intellect of a child, / With a mind darkened by ignorance, / Swayed by sinful companions, / And with a mind utterly agitated by afflictions,
