"Furthermore, Guhyakādhipati! A bodhisattva observes the precept against taking what is not given; toward the belongings possessed by others, he does not give rise to the thought of touching or taking them, much less taking other things that are not given. There are other forms of upāya: seeing that sentient beings are stingy and hoard possessions without cultivating the merit of giving, according to their character, in order to destroy their stinginess, free from self and other he performs giving for their sake, and by praising timely giving, causes them to obtain wondrous beauty and the like. Guhyakādhipati! If a bodhisattva gives rise to a greedy thought and touches and takes it, that bodhisattva falls back from the factors of awakening and transgresses the unconditioned Vinaya Dharma.
