Such a one should be appointed reader.
Steadfast, worthy of the master,
Great in wisdom, discerning right and wrong,
Pure, relying on half the king's body:
Such a one is the judge.
Practiced in the great science of medicine,
Knowing the dharma, pleasing and sweet-spoken,
Perfect in ritual procedures and disposition,
Skilled at healing like [quenching] a blazing fire on a plain,
And skilled in all the characteristics of disease:
To such a physician should the king attend.
Knowing another's conduct indirectly,
Strong, speaking pleasantly,
Constantly knowing the minds of others:
Such a one should be appointed doorkeeper.
Practiced with weapons, capable,
Familiar with mounts as a bird [with flight],
Heroic, steadfast, and accomplished:
Know such a one to be the army commander.
Known to descend from an alert ancestral line,
Knowing the treatises, cooking delicious food,
Highly clean, and affectionate:
Such a one should serve as cook.
Possessing great wisdom, free of hesitation, accomplished,
Fearless in all treatises,
And born of noble lineage:
Know such a one to be the inner minister.
Blind, crippled, lame,
Affectionate, steadfast, constantly diligent,
And unmoving like a mountain:
Such should serve as harem guards.
Accompanied by bodily gestures,
Skilled in the path of song and lyrics,
Knowing dance and metrics supremely:
One should rely on such performers.
Steadfast, attaining victory,
Possessing a white umbrella and white banner,
Always victorious in battle:
Such a one is renowned as the son of the king.
Just as a dog tormented by hunger,
Holding a dry bone in its mouth,
Thinks the sorrow of bleeding is pleasure;
So too those delusion-blinded by desire
Regard women as pleasure.
