At that time, on this account, the Bhagavat assembled the bhikṣu-saṅgha and with innumerable expedients rebuked the bhikṣus of the Vaggumudā park: 'What you have done is improper; it is not deportment, not the Dharma of a śramaṇa, not pure conduct, not conduct that conforms [with the Dharma]; it is what should not be done. How could you foolish men, the bhikṣus of the Vaggumudā park, mutually deprive each other of life?' Having rebuked them with innumerable expedients, the Bhagavat told the bhikṣus: 'The foolish men, the bhikṣus of the Vaggumudā park, were the first to transgress the precept regarding multiple āsrava-states. From this day forward, I lay down the precept for the bhikṣus, assembling the ten objectives, up to the long endurance of the true Dharma. Those who wish to recite the precept should recite it thus: "Whatever bhikṣu shall intentionally with his own hand deprive a human being of life, or provide them with a knife, or praise death, or incite them to welcome death, saying: 'Alas, man, what use is this wretched life to you? Death is better for you than living!'—having such a mind and thought, employing various expedients to praise death or incite them to welcome death—this bhikṣu is defeated (pārājika), not to live in communion."'
