I, Guṇalakṣaṇālaṅkāra Bodhisattva, now come from the Buddha-realm of Amitābha. I now speak to assist and bring about the bodhisattva's teaching, bringing about merit and virtue by skillful means to cause them quickly to attain the first stage and possess all the major and minor marks. With excellent means, I teach them to practice them. What are the excellent means? First, their virtue is vast and extensive, universally compassionate toward sentient beings. Second, they shelter all beings, like a mother loving her child without seeing its faults. Third, they accumulate virtue and practice goodness without reckoning their toil. Fourth, they diligently cultivate renunciation, wisdom, and vigor, turning to transform others. Fifth, they practice the ten virtuous actions and turn to instruct sentient beings. Sixth, they keep the precepts purely, like a bright pearl, clearly transparent inside and out without blemish or dust. Seventh, their verbal instructions arising from deeds of body, mouth, and mind take compassion as their basis. Eighth, in whatever deeds they undertake, rescuing and saving is foremost. Ninth, they should expound the Dharma to the assembly with subtle and marvelous skillful means, with a gentle and pleasant countenance, not going against their wishes. Tenth, they should travel to various countries to be great royal teachers, shouldering sentient beings and embracing all without weariness in mind. These are called the ten great wondrous practices of a bodhisattva who wishes to ascend to the first stage when first generating the mind. Ten sets of ten like this are called a hundred merits, forming one mark. I have now spoken of them in brief. Now I wish to speak a mantra to cause them to be quickly accomplished. There is a mantra named *Damālukute*, which in the language of Jin means 'accomplishing the marks and adornments of merit and virtue, cutting off habitual defilements, and extinguishing the defilements that obstruct the Path.'
