I, the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, wish to speak of four universal vows. What are the four? First, to shelter and nurture all sentient beings, like a bridge or boat carrying people across untiringly; second, to contain myriad things like the great void; third, may my body be like a medicinal tree, so that whoever hears of it has all sicknesses and suffering eliminated; fourth, may it be that when I attain buddhahood in the future, the sentient beings I cross over will be as numerous as the sands of the Gaṅgā. These are the bodhisattva’s mind of vast salvation.
