Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva further wished to explain: "If anyone can perform Buddha-work within the bequeathed Dharma of Śākyamuni Buddha, we eight will always protect him. In brief, there are four matters. What are the four? First, remembering immeasurable suffering, he sees the suffering of sentient beings as no different from his own. Second, all the merit of the precepts that we maintain is entirely relinquished and given to sentient beings, jointly dedicated toward unsurpassed bodhi. Third, he can endure painful matters, shouldering all sentient beings to the other shore. Fourth, he inspires the minds of all sentient beings, no differently than an affectionate father caring for his son. These are the bodhisattva's pure, wondrous practices of self-benefit and benefiting others."
