“Namo Buddhāya, namo Dharmāya,
namo Saṅghāya. I pay homage to the Buddha, the World-Honoured One,
the great Dharma King who illuminates the world, who in Jambudvīpa
first spoke the dhāraṇī-mantra,
the pure, supreme Dharma of amṛta,
and I pay homage to the unattached Saṅgha.” Having paid homage to the Muni's feet,
he immediately spoke verses, saying: “The World-Honoured One, the Tathāgatas,
śrāvakas, and pratyekabuddhas,
the ṛṣis, the world-protecting kings,
and the mighty nāgas, devas, and spirits—such assemblies as these
are all born among humans.
There are yakṣas and rākṣasas
who constantly delight in devouring human fetuses.
Outside the realm of human kings,
they cannot be restrained by strong force;
they can cause humans to be childless,
harming the fetus in the womb.
When a man and a woman unite,
they confound their minds,
so that conception is not achieved;
or at the stages of kalala and arbuda,
they make them childless by harming the fetus,
and snatch life at the time of birth.
These are all evil spirits
causing torment and harm to them.
I shall now speak their names;
may the Buddha listen to my exposition.”
