If there is a good man or good woman who wishes to practice this retention, they must abstain from alcohol, meat, and the five pungent roots. Having observed pure purification for a full seven days, wash and bathe cleanly, put on new clean clothes, give rise to a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, burn agarwood, sandalwood, or kunduruka incense before an image, recite [the dhāraṇī] one hundred and eight times, single-mindedly focus on Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, and invoke the name three times: 'Fulfill my wishes!'
