5.41

The Buddha Speaks the Dhāraṇī for Extensive Learning

5.43

The Buddha told Ānanda: "Take the three substances brāhmī, citraka (white harītakī), and pippalī, combine them, empower them with the mantra one thousand times at dawn, mix them with ghee and honey, and consume it; one will immediately attain the retention of teachings upon a single hearing."

5.50

To practice this method of retention, take sweet flag root, empower it seven times with the mantra, and hold it in the mouth; if one upholds this, it will be extremely auspicious and good.

5.51

Phrases of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara's Heart Dhāraṇī

5.54

If there is a good man or good woman who wishes to practice this retention, they must abstain from alcohol, meat, and the five pungent roots. Having observed pure purification for a full seven days, wash and bathe cleanly, put on new clean clothes, give rise to a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, burn agarwood, sandalwood, or kunduruka incense before an image, recite [the dhāraṇī] one hundred and eight times, single-mindedly focus on Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, and invoke the name three times: 'Fulfill my wishes!' For those of sharp faculties, Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara will appear in their dreams with what was sought, and it will surely be obtained according to their wish.

5.55

Phrases of the Dhāraṇī for Invoking Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara

5.57

5.58

Phrases of Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara's Dhāraṇī for Walking the Path and Seeking Wishes

5.60

The method of practicing it: before an image of Avalokiteśvara, smear the ground with fragrant mud, make offerings of incense and flowers, and recite during the six periods of the day and night, reciting one hundred and twenty times in each period. According to what is sought, Avalokiteśvara will manifest to the practitioner in the form they ought to see, and whatever is sought will all be obtained as desired.

5.61

The Buddha Speaks the Mantra for Begging Rain

5.63

The method of practicing it: twenty-eight blue banners are required, placing seven in each of the four directions, and erect one large banner in the center. In each of the four directions place seven blue seats, and offer seven platters of cakes, rice, fruit, grapes, rock sugar, pomegranate syrup, ghee, curds, and honey as offerings. Wash and bathe cleanly, wear new clean blue robes, boots, and hat, burn agarwood, white sandalwood, kunduruka incense, tagara incense, *pārikha* incense, and camphor incense, scatter blue flowers, and fast for three days. Spread a blue mat in the center; sitting upon the seat facing east, read and recite one hundred and eight times up to one thousand and eighty times, and rain will surely fall. Single-mindedly implore, taking the attainment [of rain] as the limit. If one's capacity does not reach the full provision of offering implements, set out offerings as one is able; obtaining one or two types of incense will also suffice, as long as one recites the mantra with single-minded devotion. If capacity is insufficient, set up one banner per direction and one platter as well; blue clothing is mandatory.

5.64

5.72

The Sūtra of the Mantra Spoken by the Buddha for Children Afflicted by the Evil Eye

5.73

Homage to the Buddha! Homage to the Dharma! Homage to the Saṅgha of Monks! Homage to all Buddhas and disciples of all Buddhas! Homage to the Seven Buddhas of Antiquity and disciples of the Seven Buddhas of Antiquity! Homage to all teachers and disciples of all teachers! Cause what I empower with this mantra to immediately accord with my wishes!

5.75

Dhāraṇī for Eradicating Transgressions and Entering the First Ground

5.77

For three times seven days, abandon all mundane affairs and engagements, and before an image of the Buddha, during the six periods of the day and night, cast the five limbs to the ground and recite this dhāraṇī. Once the twenty-one days have passed, all heavy karmic obscurations of transgression since beginningless time will be completely extinguished without remainder, and one will attain entry into the first ground.

5.78

Dhāraṇī Spoken by the Buddha to Recite First if One Wishes to Read and Recite All Scriptures

5.80

If one wishes to read and recite all scriptures, one should first recite this dhāraṇī, and only then read and recite them; one will then remember them and never forget.

5.81

Dhāraṇī for Tying One's Belt to Bind Soldiers and Bandits

5.83

Only when I untie my knot shall the pursuing soldiers reach me. If one encounters arrest by government officials or pursuit by bandits, chant the mantra beside [it] fourteen times and tie one's belt; having tied it, chant the mantra beside [it] again. As one is about to reach peace and security, then untie the belt. This mantra is of great efficacy; one should always read it with a pure and unified mind.

5.84

Dhāraṇī Mantra for Toothache

5.85

Homage to the Buddha, homage to the Dharma, homage to the Saṃgha of bhikṣus. Homage to the bhikṣus Śāriputra, Taulu, and Mahāmaudgalyāyana. Homage to the Worthy Bodhimati, whose fame is heard throughout the ten directions. In the north is Mount Gandhamādana; there is a king of worms named Xiuxiuwude residing in the molar teeth. He shall dispatch messengers: let them not dare to eat these molars and teeth, their roots, within the molars, or beside the molars. If the worms do not immediately drop down into the vessel, their heads shall split into seven pieces, like a ku-ra-la-shan. Brahmā encourages and assists this mantra. Homage to the Buddha, may what I chant immediately come to pass as wished!

5.86

Hold pure water in the mouth and chant the mantra once, spit the water into a vessel, and cease chanting after seven times.

5.87

Dhāraṇī for Making Rain Fall (from the Mahāmegha Sūtra)

5.88

At that time, by the spiritual power of the World-Honoured One, four black clouds arose and sweet rain fell everywhere together; three kinds of clouds were raised, namely lower, middle, and upper, emitting the sound of sweet rain like heavenly music, which all sentient beings delighted to hear. At that time the World-Honoured One immediately spoke the mantra, saying:

5.90

"If there are any nāgas who, having heard this mantra, do not send down sweet rain, their heads shall split into seven pieces." At that time, as many Buddha-worlds as a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of asaṃkhyeya kalpas of Buddhas shook with the six kinds of earthquakes. At that time, sentient beings, because of this earthquake, saw one another and mutually shook each other even up to the Śuddhāvāsa. When the Śuddhāvāsa had shaken, the nāgas and clouds both stirred. When the nāgas and clouds stirred, they poured down a great rain; at that time all ninety-eight thousand great rivers in Jambudvīpa were filled with the seven jewels, and all the pools together yielded the flavor of supreme medicine. Although it rained for seven days, there was no further harm done, and the joy of sentient beings was like drinking amṛta. The rivers were filled with water of eight virtues, namely: delicious, cold, light, soft, clear, pure, fragrant, and clean; when drunk, it was harmonizing and comfortable, and after being drunk, there was no ailment. All aquatic creatures gave forth wondrous sounds. At that time on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa in Rājagṛha, the seven jewels covered the ground without any empty space. The sky again rained utpala, padma, kumuda, and puṇḍarīka flowers made of the seven jewels. All aquatic creatures brought forth the mind of anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi; animal beings embraced the joy of the Mahāyāna and thirsted for the Mahāyāna, turning to one another with loving-kindness like an only child. The bhikṣus united in mind to make offerings to the Buddha.

5.91

Next is Spoken the Dhāraṇī for Binding Nāga Kings (from the Mahāmegha Sūtra)

5.93

One should bind them swiftly, using four stakes of khadira wood twelve finger-breadths long. Using this, empower four five-colored threads with the mantra: empower each thread twenty-one times, making twenty-one knots in each thread. Having bound the four stakes with these four threads, drive them into the four quarters; this is the completion of binding all nāgas.

5.94

Dhāraṇī for Endowing All Sense Faculties Spoken by Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

5.96

For the ritual of this dhāraṇī, one must burn agarwood incense. If one is deficient in any bodily marks, empower grass with the mantra one hundred and eight times, and all sense faculties will become complete. If feet, hands, ears, eyes, or nose have defects or deficiencies, rub them with the grass; through the power of this mantra it can protect them all and cause them to heal, enabling them to attain completeness.

5.97

Sūtra on the Incantation of the Earth Spoken by the Buddha (This is an apocryphal scripture; the compiler of the mantras did not know this and mistakenly collected it here.)

5.98

The Buddha said: "If there are illnesses, earth-qi, or when pacifying the homestead and building a house, first recite the mantra three times, burn incense, make offerings, and then dig the earth; there shall be no taboos." The Buddha said: "May all spirits, ghost kings of heaven and earth in the ten directions, the sun, moon, five planets, and twenty-eight lunar lodges all clearly listen." The Buddha said: "Today, on behalf of So-and-so, I inspect and oversee the pacification of the homestead and the building of chambers, the management of gates, wells, and stoves, mortar-mills, grinders, granaries and storehouses, east and west wings, south chamber and north hall, and making pens and enclosures for the six domestic animals. Today I command on behalf of So-and-so: Generals of the Wandering Month-Sha and Five-Earth Spirit Office, spirits of the four seasons—Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise—Year-Sha, Month-Sha, the Six-Jia taboos, the Twelve Spirits, and the subterranean hidden dragons: each stay peacefully in your place and do not confound east and west! If there is any movement, burn incense and bow down to proclaim: 'The Buddha has an essential decree; do not recklessly interfere! Your heads will split into seven pieces, and your bodies will not remain whole!' You shall not leave your original offices without water and gruel. Urgent mantra, in accordance with the statutes and ordinances!"

5.99

After work has begun, it causes the halls and chambers to be eternally secure and the house to be completed; one will obtain wealth, noble status, auspicious promotions, travel, and join the military, while scholar-officials will be suited for office, and doing business will yield profits. People will have no disease, and the household will flourish. Each day will bring abundance with a hundred sons and a thousand grandsons. Twenty-five spirits will guard the family gate, government officers and bandits and unnatural disasters will not approach, calamities and portents will be extinguished, and enmity and hatred will not arise. Fathers will be kind and sons filial, grandfathers virtuous and grandsons compliant, men loyal and women chaste, elder brothers good and younger brothers respectful, yielding in righteousness and humble, husbands harmonious and wives gentle, with deep affection, righteousness, and closeness to kin; one will attain whatever the heart desires, and wherever one turns will always succeed. It shall cause the person observed to have all hundred illnesses extinguished, to practice like a bodhisattva, and to attain the Way like a Buddha.

5.100

Dhāraṇī Mantra for Difficult Childbirth Spoken by the Nirgrantha Deva

5.101

Homage to Gandha Deva, may the phrases of my mantra be fulfilled as wished and become auspicious! He then spoke this mantra:

5.103

The ritual of the mantra says: write it on birch bark or paper, burn the written mantra into ashes, and have the woman ingest it in water; she will immediately give birth.

5.104

5.108

If one wishes to know whether a person is poisoned or not, have them urinate into a bronze vessel and look: if there is grease in the vessel, they are.

5.112

Dhāraṇī for Those Who Suddenly Fall Gravely Ill and Faint into Unconsciousness

5.114

This mantra is for those who suddenly contract a serious illness and faint into unconsciousness, being unaware of themselves.
