To practice this mantric rite: from the eighth to the fifteenth day of the śuklapakṣa, smear the ground with cow dung; use fresh, fine earthenware vessels to hold fragrant juice, and one earthenware vessel to hold milk; one lamp is required, as well as garlands strung with extremely fine fragrant flowers. Fast for three days, and bathe three times a day. One should spread grass upon the ground, and within seven days recite it eight hundred times. One should stand before an image of Avalokiteśvara, wear fresh and clean clothes, burn black solid agarwood incense, and recite this mantra at the three times of the day; it will surely be auspicious, and whatever is wished in one's heart will surely be obtained. Whether one empowers water, empowers earth, knots thread, or empowers mustard seeds and burns them, or empowers grass—do whatever is convenient according to one's wish. If used to treat bodily illnesses, it must be chanted over before meals, and all illnesses will be eliminated and cured. This mantra accordant with the heart's wishes should be practiced over seven nights, which will also cause all the aforementioned mantras to be practiced with good fortune. This mantra is the mind-accordant mantra spoken by Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva: all that is sought will be granted according to one's wishes; it can extinguish all terrors, eliminate all painful sicknesses, untie all bindings, remove all enmity and harm, eliminate all demonic poisons, eliminate all fever diseases, subdue all hostile bandits, and remove madness and demon-induced sicknesses. If one wishes to travel far, recite the mantra and tie the corner of one's own garment; it can remove all multitude of evils. If one binds dyed thread upon a sick person's body, there is none who will not be cured. If sprinkled with water or bound with black thread, it can also protect oneself and protect others; even if one has fallen into hell, one will also receive liberation. Such is the original vow of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, to rescue and deliver all sentient beings.
