To practice this dhāraṇī ritual, one should use pure white fine cotton or fine cloth to make an image of Avalokiteśvara: the body wearing white clothes, seated on a lotus flower, holding a lotus flower in one hand and a water vessel (kuṇḍikā) in the other, with hair standing tall. Carry out the practice before the image of Avalokiteśvara from the eighth day to the fifteenth day of the śuklapakṣa: wear fresh, clean clothes, smear the ground with cow dung, and further smear and dust scented clay over it; give rise to a mind of reverence, fill twelve vessels with raw milk, fill four earthenware vessels with fine incense—it must be extremely fine incense—prepare sixteen garlands of flowers, sixteen earthenware lamps, burn dark, hard agarwood incense, prepare four large earthenware jars filled with pure water, take various flowers and place them in the jars, burn fuel of milky wood, and also prepare eight hundred lotus flowers. Recite the dhāraṇī, keeping the sound continuous and the virtuous mind unbroken; each time it is recited once, cast one flower into the fire. At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva will come from the east and manifest great spiritual light burning above the fire. Then Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva will manifest in the fire resembling the painted image, the body clad in white clothes, the hair standing tall, holding a vessel and flower, appearing in the fire. When one sees this, let the mind have no fears; know that this person will immediately shut the gates to the paths of hell, pretas, and animals, and whatever is desired and wished for will all be attained: whether seeking to become noble, wishing to fly through the sky, or wishing to give to sentient beings, all will be attained at will. Whether wishing for extensive learning, wishing for skill in debate, wishing to enter profound [states], wishing for hidden treasures, wishing to ingest immortal elixir, wishing for marvelous complexion, wishing for bezoar (gorocanā), wishing for the divine eye, or wishing for the divine ear; it extinguishes all pain and illness; if bodily faculties are incomplete, or if there is leprosy or any suffering from illness, even up to all the faculties of the body being deficient, all will be cured, and all heavy karma from the past will also be eliminated. If a man desires a female body, or a woman desires a male body, it will all be attained as wished. When what was sought is fulfilled, send off Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.
