At that time the Buddha said to the Venerable Ānanda: "Receive this dhāraṇī-pātra, upholding and chanting it, and explain it widely for all. If a good man or a good woman receives this dhāraṇī-pātra, upholding and chanting it, they will know their past lives across countless lifetimes. This dhāraṇī-pātra, Ānanda, was spoken by incalculable koṭis of Buddhas in this manner. Ānanda! As for this dhāraṇī-pātra, whether traveling on a road, or troubled by bandits, or by tigers and wolves, or in water, or encountering matters with rulers and magistrates, one should be mindful of this dhāraṇī-pātra, chanting, reciting, and upholding this dhāraṇī-pātra. Ānanda! If it is tied to a withered tree, it will immediately sprout leaves, flowers, and fruits; how much more so when spoken for people? If an illness is not cured, one should recite this mantra for all sick people." When the Buddha had spoken the sūtra, the Venerable Ānanda and all those in the assembly rejoiced and put it into practice.
