The annual duty officer has ten virtues: first, exerting effort for the sake of the Three Jewels. Second, if bhikṣus come from afar, welcoming them and settling them comfortably. Third, providing them with beds, mats, or lamps from three to seven days. Fourth, if the rooms are all full, vacating one's own and giving the place to them. Fifth, frequently going to inquire after and look after them. Sixth, explaining the customs of the region to them. Seventh, worrying over what they lack. Eighth, if among them there are those who dispute with one another, not taking sides, but constantly reconciling them to put them at peace. Ninth, if lodging together is inconvenient or uncomfortable, not rebuking or scolding them in the saṅgha, nor calling on others to do something together that would displease the host. Tenth, not disputing with the vihārapāla to look for faults, or frequently gossiping about it in the saṅgha or while walking, nor taking property belonging to the Three Jewels to bestow as personal favors. One who practices according to the Dharma may serve as the annual duty officer. By what causes and conditions do all things arise? There are five matters: first, the four seasons and five elements; second, seed-nature; third, spontaneity; fourth, giving; fifth, merit. Through these five matters, the annual duty officer is certain to attain Buddhahood.
