一時佛住王舍城迦蘭陀竹園。是時目連從坐而起，白佛言：「世尊！我今欲有所問。唯願世尊為我演說。」佛言：「善哉！汝所問者，能大利益無量眾生。恣汝所問。」

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Rājagṛha, at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove. At that time, Maudgalyāyana arose from his seat, addressed the Buddha, and said, "Bhagavat! I now wish to ask a question. I only pray that the Bhagavat will expound it for me." The Buddha said, "Excellent! What you ask will greatly benefit immeasurable sentient beings. Ask as you please."
