"Son of the Buddha! Third, entering the illusion-like samādhi. This refers to the twelve dhyānas: the five factors of initial investigation, sustained investigation, joy, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind are the causes, with the sixth, the silent mind, as the substance of concentration; the four factors of joy, bliss, pliancy, and one-pointedness of mind are the causes, with the fifth, the silent mind, as the substance of concentration; the five factors of bliss, guarding, mindfulness, knowledge, and one-pointedness of mind are the causes, with the sixth, the silent mind, as the substance of concentration; the four factors of neither-pain-nor-pleasure, guarding, mindfulness, and one-pointedness of mind are the causes—the causes are called skillful means—with the fifth, the silent mind, as the substance of concentration. Dhyāna is called the branch-forest, and samādhi is called restraint and control. Enduring for kalpas without scattering, it is therefore called samādhi. The four immaterial absorptions likewise have five factors; because substance and function are similar, their path of skillful means is the same. As for the factors: the five factors of ideation, guarding, correctness, contemplation, and one-pointedness of mind are the causes, with the sixth, the silent mind, as the substance of concentration. From concentration arise the four immeasurable minds, called the four immeasurable concentrations, because the noble ones manifest in conformity with the dharmas of ordinary mortals. By the power of mastery, they further transcend these dharmas to enter immeasurable concentration, in order to teach and transform all sentient beings across hundreds of thousands of Buddha-lands.
