時釋迦牟尼佛頂髻放一切佛光、一切菩薩光，復集十方各百億佛土其中佛及菩薩。一切皆集已，即於是眾中告文殊師利菩薩、普賢菩薩、法慧菩薩、功德林菩薩、金剛幢菩薩、金剛藏菩薩、善才童子菩薩言：「汝見是大眾中敬首菩薩，能問三觀法界諸佛自性清淨道，一切菩薩所修明觀法門。汝等七菩薩，各領百萬大眾，應受觀學如是法門。佛子！我今更重說如是明觀法，所謂六入次第道。諦聽善思，修諸智慧，戒勅於眾，受用伏行。佛子！若一切眾生初入三寶海以信為本，住在佛家以戒為本。佛子！始行菩薩若信男若信女中，諸根不具、黃門、婬男婬女、奴婢、變化人受得戒，皆有心向故。初發心出家欲紹菩薩位者，當先受正法戒。戒者是一切行功德藏根本，正向佛果道一切行本。是戒能除一切大惡，所謂七見六著，正法明鏡。佛子！今為諸菩薩結一切戒根本，所謂三受門：攝善法戒，所謂八萬四千法門；攝眾生戒，所謂慈悲喜捨化及一切眾生皆得安樂；攝律儀戒，所謂十波羅夷。

At that time, the uṣṇīṣa of Śākyamuni Buddha emitted all the lights of the Buddhas and all the lights of the bodhisattvas, and he again assembled the Buddhas and bodhisattvas from one hundred billion Buddha lands in each of the ten directions. When all had assembled, within that assembly he addressed the bodhisattvas Mañjuśrī, Samantabhadra, Dharmamati, Guṇaratna, Vajraketu, Vajragarbha, and the youth Sudhana, saying: "Do you see Bodhisattva Śraddhāpradāna in this great assembly, who is able to inquire about the three contemplations, the dharmadhātu, the naturally pure path of all Buddhas, and the bright contemplation Dharma-gate practiced by all bodhisattvas? You seven bodhisattvas, each leading a great assembly of one million, should receive and contemplate, study and practice such a Dharma-gate. Disciples of the Buddha! I now speak once more of this method of bright contemplation, namely the gradual path of the six entries. Listen attentively and reflect well; cultivate all types of wisdom, instruct the assembly with the precepts, and accept, apply, subdue [defilements], and practice it. Disciples of the Buddha! When all sentient beings first enter the ocean of the three jewels, they take faith as the foundation; dwelling in the household of the Buddha, they take the precepts as the foundation. Disciples of the Buddha! Among newly practicing bodhisattvas, whether faithful men or faithful women, those with incomplete faculties, eunuchs, prostitutes, slaves, and magically created beings can all receive the precepts, because they all have the intention. Those who have first generated the aspiration, gone forth from the household life, and wish to succeed to the bodhisattva stages should first receive the precepts of the true Dharma. The precepts are the root of the treasury of all wholesome practices and merits, the root of all practices leading directly to the path of the Buddha fruit. These precepts can eradicate all great evils, namely the seven views and six attachments; they are a bright mirror of the true Dharma. Disciples of the Buddha! I now formulate for the bodhisattvas the foundation of all precepts, namely the three gates of reception: the precepts of embracing wholesome dharmas, which are the eighty-four thousand Dharma-gates; the precepts of embracing sentient beings, which are loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity, transforming all sentient beings so that they attain peace and happiness; and the precepts of restraining discipline, which are the ten pārājikas.
