The Buddha said: "Buddha son! Excellent is this question you have asked. Buddha son! First, one should confer the bodhisattva Dharma precepts upon those who listen to the Dharma, and afterward expound for them the bodhisattva's original practices, the Dharma-gate of the six entries. Buddha son! Successively confer upon them the four refuges: taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma, taking refuge in the Saṃgha, and taking refuge in the precepts. Having thereby attained the four indestructible faithful minds, afterward confer upon them the ten precepts: not killing, not stealing, not engaging in false speech, not committing sexual misconduct, not selling liquor, not speaking of the transgressions of householder or renunciant bodhisattvas, not being stingy, not giving way to anger, not praising oneself and disparaging others, and not slandering the Three Jewels. These are the ten pārājikas, dharmas that cannot be repented. Buddha son! Having received the ten precepts, further teach the listener to make offerings to the Dharma master, constantly providing immeasurable celestial flowers and incense, hundreds of thousands of lamps, hundreds of thousands of celestial robes and necklaces, hundreds of thousands of musical entertainments, food and drink of a hundred flavors, dwellings, and sūtras, fully supplying all necessary articles. One should propagate and honor the Dharma master just as one reveres the Buddha, just as one serves one's father and mother, and just as in the Brahmanical Dharma of serving fire. Buddha son! Just as one serves Śakra, parents, teachers, and monks, pay homage three times each day. Giving up body and life for the sake of the Dharma—such a person is truly a Buddha son. For such seekers of the Dharma, one may then expound the original practices of the bodhisattva, the necklace Dharma-gate transmitted successively by hundreds of thousands of myriads of Buddhas." At that time the assembly of one billion lamented, saying: "In future ages there will be no Dharma, no Three Jewels, and no worthy persons, because the times and kalpas will arise from an evil age. Those who expound the Dharma and those who listen to the Dharma will be rare indeed, rare indeed!" Again rising from their seats, they each wept sorrowfully, wailing with great grief, so that the earth shook, the ocean billowed, the three thousand worlds turned upside down, and the twenty-eight lunar mansions, sun, and moon disappeared. At that time the great assembly withdrew their supernatural powers and solemnly stood in reverence, accepting, upholding, reciting, and expounding the meaning and phrases, imperishable through ten kalpas, boundless and inexhaustible. Each rejoicing and putting it into practice, they paid homage and withdrew.
