"Son of the Buddha! 'Land' refers to the dwelling place of all worthy and noble ones. Therefore, all sentient beings, worthy ones, and noble ones each dwell in their own land of retribution. Ordinary sentient beings dwelling within the five aggregates constitute the land of direct retribution; mountains, forests, and the great earth, shared in common, are called the land of circumstantial retribution. Noble ones of the first ground also have two lands: first, the land of real wisdom, where former wisdom abides and subsequent wisdom serves as the land; second, the land that adaptively manifests as pure or defiled across counted kalpas; and so it is up to the land of the Stainless Ground. For all sentient beings up to the Stainless Ground, none [of their lands] are pure lands, because they abide in retribution. The Buddha alone dwells in the land of the supreme Dharma-nature of the middle way. For this reason, in the past in the Universal Light Hall, I broadly expounded the gate of the pure land for all sentient beings.
